Deaf Village and SP Electricity North West have worked together to make the Extra Care Register more accessible to Deaf BSL users across the North West

New Extra Care Register leaflets featuring a dedicated British Sign Language QR code are now being distributed across the North West as part of a partnership between Deaf Village and SP Electricity North West.

The QR code allows Deaf people and British Sign Language users to quickly access information about the Extra Care Register in BSL, removing communication barriers and helping more people understand the support available to them.

The Extra Care Register is a free service for people who may need additional support during a planned or unexpected power cut. By joining the register, customers can make SP Electricity North West aware of their communication requirements and individual circumstances.

Alongside the accessible BSL information, Deaf Village is offering free support to Deaf people who would like help understanding the register or completing their registration.

Debra Cartlidge, CEO of Deaf Village, said:

“We are delighted to see these new leaflets reaching people across the North West. For many Deaf people, important information is still not routinely available in their first or preferred language.

“The BSL QR code means Deaf customers can access clear information independently, while our team is also available to provide free additional support. This partnership is an important step towards making essential services more accessible and inclusive.”

The partnership aims to increase awareness of the Extra Care Register within the Deaf community and ensure that Deaf customers know what support may be available before, during and after a power cut.

People who receive the leaflet can scan the QR code using their phone to watch the information in BSL.
